We have officially entered the BRRRR Season! If you live in Upstate New York, you know just how cold it can get this time of year. As the temperature lowers, you might notice that your pain is getting worse! Your back, neck, knees, and shoulders most likely are the problem areas. Winter pain flare- ups are extremely common, but the good news is that there are reasons behind them, and there are effective ways to get relief.

At Adirondack Total Care, we help patients find comfort all year long, and winter is one of the most important times to stay ahead of your symptoms.

Why does pain feel worse in the winter?

  1. Muscles tighten in the cold

Cold temperatures cause your muscles and joints to stiffen, which limits mobility and increases soreness. Even simple tasks can feel more painful.

  2. Barometric pressure drops

Changes in barometric pressure can cause tissues to expand slightly, putting pressure on nerves and painful joints-especially for those with arthritis, old injuries, or chronic pain.

  3. Reduced activity levels

When it's cold, people naturally move less. Less movement means more stiffness, more inflammation, and more pain.

  4. Poor circulation

Cold weather slows blood flow to muscles and connective tissues, making pain more noticeable and healing slower.

Common conditions that flare in the winter

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Knee arthritis

  • Hip pain

  • Shoulder pain

  • Nerve pain

  • Migraines and tensions headaches

How to reduce winter pain flare-ups

  • Stay consistently warm

Layer clothing, use heating pads, warm showers, and keep your home temperature comfortable. Even a few degrees warmer can reduce stiffness.

  • Keep moving-Even gently

Light stretching, walking, and mobility exercises help prevent tightness. Consistency beats intensity in water.

  • Stay Hydrated

Cold weather makes people forget to drink water. Dehydrated muscles= more pain.

  • Boost blood flow

Warm compresses, massage and movement help increase circulation to painful areas.

  • Manage Inflammation

Winter diet tends to be heavier. Staying mindful of anti- inflammatory foods can help make a difference.
